Having a high profile spa, hotel and restaurant, we often find ourselves in a position where we are asked to donate prizes for various social initiatives. Of course we would like to support as many as possible but we have to be selective. This we do by trying to support the projects within our community, with the philosophy that if everyone looks after those worthy causes and charities in their area then everyone should be covered. One of our major social initiatives is Umthombo (www.foodforthoughtkzn.co.za) which helps look after and educate street kids in Durban. I initially thought this was something outside of our immediate area, however after being told that Durban was an attractive area for street kids because of its warm climate, and that most of the children on the street had run away from outlying areas of KZN, it made sense to sign up and be part of this initiative. Perhaps taking on a local charity is a good idea for a personal New Year resolution?

Crane Foundation news

The Crane Foundation, located next to Fordoun, is one of our main social responsibility projects. Cranes are some of the world’s most endangered creatures, under threat through loss of habitat, poisoning, poaching, and mankind’s negative influences in general. Here in the Midlands we are privileged to have three of the Crane species: the Crowned Crane, the Blue Crane (our national bird), and the Wattled Crane. This update is from Fordoun’s founder, Jon Bates, who is closely involved with this project. Read more…

Go green

Not only do we at Fordoun work towards protecting our local environment and wildlife, we also try to operate on a greener basis. Did you know that 60% of household waste could be recycled – but only 12% actually is? Recycling glass ensures 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution, while recycling two bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea. We are also conscious of our environmental footprint and the effect of food miles – the distance our food products travel and the implications thereof. We source our fresh ingredients for Skye Restaurant from local suppliers – as the Midlands is known for its superior quality beef, dairy products, potatoes and other foodstuffs it makes sense. We also have a comprehensive herb garden, the fertile domain of our ethnobotanist, sangoma and inyanga, Dr Elliot Ndlovu.
